1. Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion
Aveeno is renowned for its colloidal oatmeal-based formulations. The oatmeal does a great job of soothing dry and irritated skin – conditions that babies are prone to. Their delicate skin will respond well to this hypoallergenic blend that combines oatmeal, dimethicone, glycerine, and other gently hydrating ingredients. We chose this as the best baby lotion as much for what’s in it as for what’s not: it’s made without dyes, toxins, or formaldehyde.
+Backed by Aveeno’s years of expertise
+Colloidal oatmeal relieves (and helps prevent) irritation
+Provides ample moisture without being heavy or greasy
+A good choice for the winter months
+Dimethicone locks in moisture for long-term results
Why We Like It – The mild but effective formulas from the Aveeno baby line have earned pediatrician approval, and that gave us peace of mind. Plus, this product delivers a solid dose of nourishment to baby skin without feeling greasy – it absorbs quickly, too.
2. California Baby Calendula Moisturizing Cream
A powerhouse mix of natural ingredients that’s gentle on sensitive skin? California Baby has captured quality in a jar with this calendula-based cream for baby’s face and body. The headliner here is a marigold extract that helps soothe troubled skin (even during eczema breakouts), and this brand takes calendula seriously enough to grow it themselves on their organic farm. Made without harsh additives, lightly scented with essential oils, and fortified with aloe vera, this is one of the best baby lotions you could hope for.
+Made with organic calendula and other plant-based emollients
+A small amount goes a long way
+Made without soy, gluten, or nut additives (does contain coconut)
+Lavender and clary sage scented
Why We Like It – Although it’s a bit spendy, a little dab of this high-performance natural baby cream goes a long way, so it’s worth the extra cost. And we love California Baby’s commitment to top-tier ingredients, along with their eco-friendly farms and manufacturing facilities.
3. Baby Magic Baby Lotion
For those of us who believe that the classic “new car smell” is the right choice for an air freshener, nothing can compare to that new baby smell, either. Baby Magic’s original baby scent satisfies our urge for the traditional – plus, this baby lotion is gentle enough to use every day because it’s made without sulfates, parabens, or dyes. Aloe and a dose of skin-friendly vitamins help keep baby soft and smooth, providing time-honored results – at a price that’ll take you back in time.
+Classic, clean baby fragrance
+Inexpensive, but safe and effective for baby’s delicate skin
+Enriched with marshmallow root extract and camellia oil
+Free of additives like phthalates or formaldehyde
Why We Like It – This classic lotion is a great deal, and we also love that it’s scented with the traditional powdery smell – it’s comforting and appealing. The mild formula is gentle on sensitive skin but moisturizes and protects, thanks to the blend of glycerin and natural oils.
4. Baby Dove Face and Body Lotion Rich Moisture
For ultra-lavish nourishment, you can always trust Dove – their moisture-rich products ensure that even the driest skin will be silky smooth. This is one of the best baby lotions for post-bathtime, especially in winter. Dimethicone and glycerin gently lock in moisture, and the pH-neutral formulation of this lotion will keep your little one hydrated and comfy. It’s dermatologist- and pediatrician-tested, too.
+Rich, nourishing formulation for dry skin
+Moisturizing effect lasts up to 24 hours
+pH-balanced and hypoallergenic
Why We Like It – Rich and soothing without greasiness, this is a contender for the best baby lotion year-round, but we especially appreciated its formula for the winter months. The pump bottle is a welcome touch, too – no need to fuss with a cap. It’s available in an unscented option, but we love the soft, delicate fragrance of this lotion.
5. Johnson’s Baby Moisturizing Pink Baby Lotion
Another scented baby lotion that will take you back – but Johnson’s has improved on their definitive product, adding coconut oil to deliver maximum skin-pampering without harsh chemical additives. Its light enough to absorb quickly, and dry skin will drink in the benefits of this retooled formula. Parents, of course, will relish the classic scent – we found the best of both worlds in this pink pump bottle.
+Reformulated with fewer ingredients than the original
+Coconut oil gently replenishes moisture
+Classic Johnson’s baby lotion scent
+Mild and hypoallergenic for sensitive or delicate skin
Why We Like It – Johnson’s has improved on their original baby lotion by reworking the formula to take out harsh additives and replace them with gentler alternatives like coconut oil. However, they wisely left us the pink bottle and the quintessential baby lotion scent – we would have missed them.
6. Noodle & Boo Super Soft Moisturizing Lotion
Natural ingredients such as almond oil and calendula are incorporated into this creamy emulsion, which comes in several options: creme douce, lavender, and fragrance-free. All of the skin lotion formulas are dermatologist-tested, free from gluten, soy, parabens, and other additives. They’re mild enough for newborns and come in a posh-looking box, which just may make these the best baby lotions for gift-giving.
+All three baby lotions are hypoallergenic
+Gentle on sensitive newborn skin
+Fortified with vitamins C and E for healthy skin
+Made without GMOs, dyes, sulfates, and other chemical additives
Why We Like It – Sweet almond oil and vitamin E give this baby lotion a silky feel, but it’s light enough to be absorbed into the skin immediately. The fragrance-free formula is a safe bet for babies with sensitive skin, and the lavender is a soothing bedtime option.
7. CeraVe Baby Cream
When a baby has seriously chafed or chapped skin, some lotions can cause stinging, so you may want to up the ante with a cream. CeraVe has formulated this lotion with ceramides, which not only moisturize, but help repair skin’s natural barriers. This baby cream is so effective that it’s been accepted by the National Eczema Association, so if your little one is prone to eczema, you’d best have this in your medicine cabinet.
+Creams are a better option than baby lotion for irritated skin
+Specially formulated as a cream baby eczema treatment
+Dimethicone seals in moisture for the best protection
+Fragrance-free and made without parabens or sulfates
Why We Like It – When baby skin is at its best, most any lotion will provide sufficient moisture and protection, but this cream for eczema for babies is the one we’d turn to in times of trouble. It’s especially appreciated as thinner baby lotion runs the risk of stinging irritated skin.
8. Cetaphil Baby Daily Lotion
A trio of natural lotion ingredients – sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, and organic calendula – blend with vitamin b5 and glycerin to deliver tender care for baby’s skin. The ingredients are mild; this lotion can be safely used on your baby’s face as well as body, which makes it great for winter-chapped cheeks and chins. Via antioxidants, the calendula may help with sensitive skin repair, and it adds a soothing element to this gentle baby lotion.
+Nature-derived oils provide just enough emollients for soft, smooth skin
+Hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested for baby’s skin
+Made without mineral oil, parabens, or colorants
+Enriched with calendula for optimal skin health.
Why We Like It – Baby lotions can leave skin sticky or greasy, notably heavier formulations. Still, the best ones (like this) dry quickly and leave baby’s skin lightly moisturized for the whole day, thanks to almond and sunflower oil. Dermatologists test Cetaphil products for even sensitive skin.
9. Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Daily Hydra Lotion
When you’re dealing with eczema, you want to get ahead of an impending breakout; this lotion is mild enough to use every day, so it’s one of the best options. While Babo Botanicals has formulated it as a baby eczema cream, the calming, hydrating ingredients (like calendula and chamomile) will nourish normal skin as well. The moisturizing effects are boosted with nature-centric ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil.
+An excellent baby cream for both eczema and daily use
+Colloidal oatmeal and calendula are best for irritated baby skin
+Shea butter may have an anti-inflammatory effect
+The botanically-based lotion is gentle for baby’s delicate skin
Why We Like It – Babo has made a baby lotion that delivers the best results from the mildest, naturally-derived ingredients. They’re committed to sustainability and strive to use organic ingredients whenever possible.
10. Earth Mama Calming Lavender Baby Lotion
Some companies are equally fussy about what goes into their lotion and what’s left out. Earth Mama skips the mineral oil, artificial fragrances, and petroleum, choosing to infuse this baby lotion with organic herbs, oils, and natural emollients to nourish baby’s skin and give you peace of mind. The lavender-vanilla scented lotion will lull baby to calmness at bedtime, and the organic shea butter will soothe skin.
+Formulated with aloe and natural, organic oils
+No artificial lavender fragrance – this is real lavender oil
+Lotion is clinically tested to be gentle on baby skin
+Light lavender-vanilla scent is perfect for bedtime
Why We Like It – There’s a host of natural ingredients at play in Earth Mama baby lotion, including olive oil, shea butter, organic vanilla, and fruit extract. The results are in; a baby’s skin will be smoother – and bedtime just might go a little smoother, too.
Baby Lotions Buyers Guide
Whether you’re looking for a light, sweetly scented lotion to moisturize normal skin, or baby is battling eczema; you’ll want to find a baby lotion that contains nurturing, gentle ingredients. Of course, there’s a flip side to this equation, too: the best baby lotion leaves out harsh or irritating chemicals. You can steer your way through ingredients panels by getting to know a few common components of skin lotions and creams, and where they fall on the seek-or-avoid continuum. We’ve put together a quick primer on what to look for on a lotion label.
Natural emollients: Many of these lubricants are derived from nature – popular oils and fats used in baby lotion formulas are coconut oil, shea butter, sunflower, almond, olive, and camellia oil. They’re chosen because they’re gentle on baby’s skin, but provide protection and can help retain skin’s natural oils. (Many of them smell great, too!)
Fortifying extracts and essences: You’ll have noticed that calendula pops up in a lot of our top ten best baby lotion picks. That’s because this botanical workhorse can help soothe troubled skin – it may have anti-inflammatory benefits, along with the power to help fight fungus and bacteria. Baby lotion or cream for eczema (including some brands approved by the National Eczema Association) may include calendula extract, but dry skin can benefit from the ingredient, too.
Natural baby lotion may also contain other plant-based (and even organic) extracts. Look for aloe barbadensis, rooibos, vanilla, clary sage, and other natural ingredients. They all can add up to make the best baby lotion or cream for your little one. (A word of caution: the jury is out on essential oils. Some brands use them judiciously; others believe they’re too harsh on baby’s skin.)
Colloidal oatmeal: This ingredient calms irritated skin, so it’s often used in cream for babies eczema issues. Aveeno is known for its colloidal oatmeal formulas, but other brands offer baby lotion with this potent-but-gentle ingredient, which is good for normal and dry skin as well. The best baby cream for eczema will contain enough of the powdery goodness to relieve itching and redness.
Lavender: The scent of this flower can help relax babies (parents, too!), so many products geared toward nighttime use contain either lavender oil or a chemical fragrance that mimics it. (The best baby lotion may be the one with natural lavender oil, but see our note above about essential oils.)
Companies will usually let you know what chemicals are not in their baby lotion formulas with a “made-without” or “free-of” banner (yay: you can skip the fine print). Here’s the list of most-often shunned chemicals:
Phthalates: The skincare industry is moving away from using these chemicals in baby lotions, but one still pops up in products that contain fragrances: DEP. It’s a chemically-derived fixative that helps scent last longer, and can be included on a skin product ingredient label under the catchall term “fragrance.” Luckily, many baby lotion brands avoid phthalates even if the fragrance is added; it’s best to check the manufacturer’s website if you’re unsure (especially if your baby has sensitive skin).
Parabens: These preservatives can disrupt normal human hormone production; they can are estrogen mimickers so that they can trick your body. The molecules can be absorbed through the skin when using lotion, which is why many cosmetic and skincare companies – including those that make baby skin products – are dropping them from their formulations.
Formaldehyde/ formaldehyde releasers: Another family of preservatives, these chemicals are usually avoided in baby skin and hair products, but some companies will let you know for sure in their “made without” labeling.
Alcohol: It can act as a preservative, a solvent, or an antibacterial, but many manufacturers of baby lotions steer clear of alcohol because it can have a drying effect on a baby’s delicate skin.
Mineral oil and petroleum jelly: These are highly effective skin moisturizers, but some consumers dislike them because they’re chemically manufactured. Some companies skip mineral oil and petroleum jelly in favor of naturally-derived oils, which may be healthier for baby skin.
If your baby has sensitive skin or dry skin, you may want to take the less-is-more approach when it comes to finding the best baby lotion: search for a formulation that has a short ingredient list. But if your little one has normal, healthy skin, you can explore a little more. Either way, the best baby lotions will leave baby’s skin hydrated and protected – and leave you feeling confident you made the right choice.
