Baby Halloween Costumes Buyers Guide

They may not be able to walk or talk yet, but they sure do look as endearing as ever! Halloween comes around once a year, but we want to make sure your baby’s first is an unforgettable one. This is why most of us want to search for the best Halloween costumes we can find for our beloved offspring. Other than the enchanting and charming characters such as baby owl costume or little munchkin, what else comes into play when looking for a Halloween costume? Continue reading to find out!

Style/Character

Baby girl with halloween custome

One of the biggest reasons why we dress up for Halloween is to be something or someone different. It’s fun, and it’s a custom and something your baby can participate in at any age! Deciding what looks best and what costume to dress your child up in is the most significant consideration for baby costumes.

Think about the theme, maybe you can also think about dressing the whole family up as The Incredibles and go with our baby Jack-Jack suggestion. If the entire family decides to take on different Disney characters, then the Woody costume is a great fit.

You can never go wrong when you dress your baby up in an animal costume, and it will always look adorable no matter what the event is. Before buying a costume, deciding on the theme will significantly lower the time you take to browse online.

We love any costume that has authentic detailing that will make your baby look like a real-life version of the character. If you are looking at Disney characters, make sure the costume is officially licensed. Only these will look the part and be 100% authentic.

While we know you may want to purchase all the animal costumes out there in one go, we would recommend just choosing 1-3 of your favorite. Babies grow pretty fast, so you might end up wasting your money, and this is especially true if you have a newborn. Continue reading to learn about what materials matter when making your child’s costume.

Material and Safety

Baby with halloween dress

The materials should always be soft without sharp protruding parts. This may seem straightforward, but you’d be surprised how many buttons go missing and are swallowed and how many costumes out there have harmful dyes. Do not sacrifice your baby’s safety for a few photos for the Gram.

Look for products that are safe and smaller parts that can be detached, so they don’t pose as a choking hazard. Small bows, buttons, flowers, etc. are all potential dangers, and your baby can swallow them without notice. We understand that it can be hard to avoid these added details due to the nature of Halloween costumes. The best ones, however, will allow you to remove them if necessary. Even if they can’t be removed, you can reinforce the stitching to make sure they hold firmly.

Avoid bumpy and scratchy materials as your baby’s skin is very sensitive, and this might lead to irritation and rashes. Not only does the material have an effect, but ruffles, pleats, and more can also create discomfort. Cotton or polyester are soft materials that are top contenders in terms of material and safety. It’s also pertinent to wash all the newly bought items to limit the number of harmful dies that may linger on the fabrics’ surfaces.

You should even go through the entire costume to make sure there are no loose and dangling threads. What isn’t a big deal to you and I could be potential snares for your baby’s fingers and toes.

Machine Washable?

As we know, babies are notoriously messy, especially the younger ones that have no bowel and bladder control and still spit-up. You will likely spend more time doing laundry with a newborn baby in the house than you ever have before. That is all well and good, but not all costumes will hold up after being machine washed. We would always suggest looking for garments than can just be thrown in with the rest of your laundry to save you the headache and time it takes to clean them yourself.

However, some of the intricately made costumes may not stand a strong cycle and spin and need to be hand-washed. In this case, it’s important to remove all the detachable pieces beforehand.

Details

Two baby boys dressed in animal costumes in autumn park, focus on baby in elephant costume

We find this to be important when you are dressing up your baby in a costume made after a specific character. The new costume could look different from the real thing, which is why we suggested above to look for ones that are officially licensed.

However, if you are going for one that is in the form of a fruit or animal, it might be easier to find options that look the part even without certain details.

Even something as simple as the tag on a new costume can irritate your baby’s soft skin. Always cut them out or look for tagless clothing.

Size

It can seem like your baby grew overnight sometimes. The sizing guidelines provided by manufacturers are just a guide, and it is by no means a definite gauge of how big each baby will be at a certain age. Always buy children’s clothes or costumes in small quantities because your baby will grow so fast it’s more than likely that he will not be able to get through it all before he has outgrown them.

A lot of mommies offset this risk by purchasing a slightly bigger baby costume, with enough room for their baby to grow into. This is a good rule of thumb, whenever you are in doubt, is always to purchase one size larger because your baby is guaranteed to grow into it.

Non-Slip Feet

If you have decided on a bodysuit, then this won’t apply to your costume. As a general rule for all baby onesies, you should always look for ones with non-slip feet. This also may not apply if your baby is a newborn or is very young and still hasn’t learned how to walk.

The soft materials are extra slippery against tile and linoleum, as well as other smooth surfaces. A costume without non-skid feet could be very dangerous for wobbly toddlers.

Easy to Slip on and off

Another important point to make sure of is a costume that’s easy to take on and off. Buttons can be very frustrating unless they are snap closure ones. Zippers are pretty easy to use, but you need to be careful not to snag your baby’s skin in the teeth of the zipper. One that has velcro is probably our top recommendation. It’s as simple as “ripping off” the fabric when it’s time to take it off, and velcro closures press shut easily.

There are even costume options without any openings and are just a simple slip-on design. Said designs must have an elastic neck, arm, and leg holes to make it easier. Remember, when it comes to a costume for your baby, the simpler, the better in terms of design.

Snap Button Closures for Diaper Changing

A baby dressed as peas for Halloween.

If your baby isn’t potty trained yet, then you need to ensure that the costume has snap closure buttons or velcro closures at the crotch. They give you easy and quick access whenever your baby needs a clean diaper. For the babies not yet potty-trained, the previously recommended slip-on designs are not recommended. They would require you to take the entire costume off of your baby before you can even start changing, and by that time, who knows what has happened down there.

To save yourself from a full-on diaper-related explosion, find a costume that’s easy to change.

Separate Pieces?

A costume with separate pieces (headpiece, booties, and bodysuit) is a great idea because your baby won’t grow out of certain pieces. If there is a little headband, the chances are that it can be reused as a choker or even a bracelet that will complement future costume designs. You can also decide what part of the costume you want to use that day and also pair the different pieces with different garments.

Conclusion

Shopping for baby clothes can be a joy, but the sizing might be problematic for these fast-growing tykes. A costume is just a baby costume but one with a more outrageous style. Taking care of a baby is hard enough; between changing, burping, feeding, and sleeping, you don’t want to worry about a baby costume that takes too much effort.

Our top 10 list is a great place to start when looking for an infant Halloween costume. Make sure the one you choose checks all of the boxes in our buying guide. This will ensure your next costume choice will be one that is comfortable for your child, easy on you, and pull in the compliments!

Expert Tip

It’s going to be a tight fit to buy your baby’s exact size for a Halloween costume. As a general rule of thumb, purchasing at least one size larger in terms of your baby’s actual age is your best bet.

Did You Know?

Baby clothes and costumes can get very pricey. A good way is to shop out-of-season and go for the clearance deals. If you do so, make sure you are buying for your baby’s potential size a couple of months down the line.
